Janelle & Josh. How freaking awesome are you two! Thank you so much for allowing me to photograph you and try out my new Sony Equipment on the two of you!
These were all taken with my new Sony A7RIII bodies with a Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8 and Sony GM 85mm 1.4 on either one. I shot almost exclusively at F1.4/1.8 but did creep up to F2.2ish for some shots just to play around. Out of the 424 images I took, I delivered 181 shots, pretty much all of them were in focus and super sharp which is freaking amazing, the majority of what I culled were duplicates (because I'm used to having to take so many to ensure it's in focus) or weird faces that no one needs to see, ever. Taking 424 Images at a couple shoot is still so many less than I would normally take and 181 is the higher side of how many I would normally have that were deliverable so that's a pretty good hit ratio (taking into consideration duplicates and funny faces).
Focus wise I'm super stoked. Moving from zoom lenses to all prime lenses and learning a new camera system all together is a little weird, mainly just getting used to the face that I have to move, prompt and think about what I'm doing. I shot this session on manual with my ISO on automatic, it don't even think it went above 200 (mainly sitting at 100-125) at any point but the images at the end in the water I did bring up between half a stop and a full stop on exposure, so I definitely will go back to full control of my ISO when it comes to darker situations. The lightness of the kit is SOOOO good. I was getting incredibly sore hands/wrists from using my beloved Canon 70-200 2.8 L lens and this 85mm gives me a just as good of a gorgeous bokeh/background blur without the weight.
I did notice more chromic aberrations than I normally get with my Canon gear in the same lighting situation but I'm going to see how that works tonight at my next couple shoot as it's not like I never got that with Canon. I shall play that one by ear.
I also notice colour banding in the sky in the edits on my website which I don't really see in my Canon images so that will be interesting to test with different presets as it's not visible in the raw files. I shot everything in the Sony ARW (RAW) format and non-compressed so I'll see what happens with shooting compressed tonight. The non-compressed file sizes are massive, like 85.7MB massive which is crazy big and wouldn't be ideal on a wedding day.
The view finder is a totally different experience and I shot mainly with the live view screen at this shoot, I'm not entirely sure what I prefer yet. Normally I would use the view finder so who knows. Both the view finder and LCD screen are not anywhere near the same experience or quality as the Canon 5D Mark IV or III.
The smallness of the camera bodies didn't bother me and I don't feel like I'll need any grips or anything with my girly hands.
The menu isn't actually that hard, I think the main thing is that I knew exactly where everything was on my Canon cameras and now it just takes me a few moments to remember where each thing is in the menu (it's bigger definitely) and what I've set the custom buttons up to do. Which will just come with use anyway.
Tonight I'll be shooting mainly with the Sony GM 135mm 1.8 and the Sony GM 24mm 1.4 with another couple over in Raglan so I'm sure I'll have more to update after my second shoot with this new kit.

I got my new kit from James at Auckland Camera Center who was super duper helpful and used Chris Turners videos on Youtube to set it all up before my shoot and customise the buttons.
All in all, I am still super happy I changed, I think the biggest thing I will have to get used to is actually the view finder and live view LCD screen differences because they slightly put me off my game at the moment as well as the use of primes. Being able to stand in one spot and zoom into get different compositions was super easy and now that I have to move my feet it takes me a few seconds longer to get the same series of shots, but I think that will actually be better and make me think more about what I'm doing.
